The three fruits otherwise known  as the ‘three myrobalans’ is a very important group of drugs in Ayurveda. We find them as a regular ingredient in many ayurvedic formulations. The three fruits are – 1) chebulic myrobalan (Terminalia chebula Retz.) 2) belliric myrobalan (Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.)Roxb.) and 3. emblic myrobalan usually known as the Indian gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica Linn.) syn. Emblica officinalis (Gaertn.). The first two myrobalans belong to the family combretaceae whereas the third is a member of the family euphorbiaceae. Mostly the rind of the dried fruits are used. They are also used as whole fruits either fresh or dried.
The combination of the three fruits is considered as rejuvenative and good to the eyes. The combination has antioxidant and laxative properties. Of the three, chebulic myrobalan is very much laxative and is met with in many laxative formulations.
The three drugs are to be taken in equal quantities by weight as a group. Sometimes they are counted and taken. In that case to form the group we will have to take chebulic, belliric and emblic fruits in the proportion of 1: 2: 4 and this will make the combination approximately equal in weight.
Phalatrika and varaa are two Sanskrit synonyms of triphalaa. The terms triphalaa and phalatrika mean the three fruits. Varaa means the best or superior. This group combats the humors pitta and kapha. It is indicated in diabetes, skin diseases, diseases of the eye and periodic fever. It increases appetite and is carminative. It is regularly administered at night to control habitual constipation. In eye diseases the powder of the three myrobalans is mixed with honey and ghee and given at night even for long courses. In market the powder of the three fruits (Thriphala Churna) is available in handy packs. In some cases licorice is also added to the combination (Triphalaadi Coorna).
